Compass Coffee Table

In the TED video of Stefan Sagmeister about taking time off he showed a compass coffee table (at 5:20) made of 340 compasses that react to magnets put on the table (at the bottom of cups). I decided instantaneously to steal this idea and build my own.

So I ordered cheap compasses from ebay and dealextreme and bought a coffee table today that has got a glass pane on top. After assembling it I put the first shipment of compasses inside. My family was excited (the kids) and playing with magnets on top of the table is fun.

Here is the result. Now I’m waiting for the next shipments of compasses to arrive to finish the table.

Update: Today (Jan.20th) (40 days after purchase) I got the last hundred compasses from customs, so I was able to finish the table which now holds 180 compasses.

Some ideas: As the compass needles contain magnets themselves they influence each other – normally aligning them when placed in rows. If you start disturbing one of those compasses from the edge of the table the change ripples through the whole lot.

I think I’ll have to devise some games for the kids and grownup kids around this table.

About three months after I created my compass table, noahw posted an extensive instructable on building a compass table from scratch. That would have been to much effort for me as I’m no woodworker. But it is an impressive project and got lots of attention. I should have made an instructable for mine before, but thats the way it is.

Steampunk Gehäuse

Nachdem ich im Cyberport Katalog das Antec Skeleton entdeckt und mich etwas darüber informiert habe, denke ich dass das eine prima Steampunk für Ungeschickte darstellt. Daher werden wir uns mal so ein Gehäuse holen, es etwas mit Messing- und Kupferfarben versehen und dann einen normalen Rechner reinpacken. Und fertig ist unser neuer Laborrechner. Vielleicht ist das ja auch was für die Buchbar.

Update: ich hab das Gehäuse und die Rechnerteile bei Cyberport bestellt. Mal sehen wann es ankommt.

Erste Versuche mit dem Arduino

Waren wirklich leicht. Die an Java angelehnte aber low Level Processing Variante für das Board ist sehr simpel. Man kann einfach auf die analogen/digitalen Pins und das Timing zugreifen.

Ich hab erstmal über die Ports (9,10,10) ein paar LED blinken lassen mit verschiedenen Pattern und Laufzeiten.

War eine gute Vorarbeit für RGB.

Das Buch ist super, da es für Tinkerer geschrieben ist und nicht für Elektrotechniker. Processing wurde ja auch für Künstler und Designer entwickelt und nicht für Softwareentwickler.

Not Laser Etching A Moleskine

Als ich das (!= Lazer etching a Moleskin) bei NYCresistor.com gesehen hab, wollte ich es natürlich nachmachen. Mein Versuch lief dann mit dem aus Acryl gelaserten MG-Drachen und der T-Shirt Presse vom Sublimationsdruck. Leider nicht ganz so gut, ich hatte entweder zuwenig Druck oder zu kurz oder was weiss ich.

Nachdem ich vor 3 Tagen eine Lego Zwergenmine (7036) von meinem Schatz bekommen habe, musste ich mir heute Nacht ein Geisterschiff + Hafen (limited, 7029) kaufen.

Beim Stöbern bin ich dann auf diese Seite gestossen, die ca. 83000 Lego Creations gesammelt hat. Wirklich beeindruckende Sachen.

Der Ablauf ist denkbar einfach:

SetExpressCheckout API Aufruf mit diversen Optionen, vor allem Preis und Return-URL
Redirect zu Paypal
Nutzer loggt sich ein und bezahlt
Rückruf zur Return URL mit TOKEN
GetExpressCheckoutDetails aufrufen und man erhält alle Details zur Transaktion

Erste Erfolge mit Sublimation + CISS

Wir haben erfolgreich die ersten Epson D92 Drucker mit den CISS versehen und die darin enthaltene Tinte durch Sublimationstinte ausgetauscht. Wichtig ist der Füllstand des CISS. Es sollte mindestens halb voll sein.

Drucken klappte gut, nur haben wir einmal vorher nicht gespiegelt und zum anderen hat Micha beim Pressen das Bild verkehrt herum aufgelegt. Da zweite Problem ist, dass auf reinen Baumwollstoffen die Farbe nicht hält, wie nach dem Waschen deutlich sichtbar war.
